Microsoft Certifications for Freshers in India: Which One First, and How to Use It to Get Your First Job
Best first Microsoft certification for freshers in India by career path: PL-300, AZ-900, AI-900 or Python PCEP. How to pair it with a portfolio project and present it on Naukri and LinkedIn.
What a certification does for a fresher, and what it does not
A certification proves you learned a defined body of knowledge and passed a proctored exam. For a fresher with no work history, that is useful: it answers the recruiter's first question, which is whether you can finish something hard on your own.
It does not prove you can do the job. Nothing on paper does. That is why the plan below treats every certification as half of a pair: the exam, plus one project that shows the skill in use. Freshers who skip the project collect badges and wait. Freshers who build the project get interviews.
Choose by path, not by popularity
Data analyst, MIS, business analyst, reporting roles. Take PL-300. It is the certification Indian job posts name most often for these roles, and the skills, Power Query, data modelling, DAX and report design, are the daily work. Project: a two-page report on a public dataset about something you understand, with a documented model and five measures you can explain. The data analyst roadmap shows the next steps.
Cloud, infrastructure, support, pre-sales. Start with AZ-900. It never expires, it is quick, and it gives you the vocabulary for every cloud interview. Project: a short written walkthrough, with screenshots, of deploying and securing a small web application on a free Azure account, including what it would cost per month and why. Then move to AZ-104 once you are in a role.
AI and automation roles. Pair AI-900 with Python PCEP. AI-900 covers the concepts and the Azure AI services; PCEP proves you can write code. Project: a small Python script that calls an AI service to classify or summarise real text, with a note on what it got wrong. The generative AI course guide explains the wider track.
Data engineering. This is a harder first target, but if you have SQL and some Python from college, DP-700 is reachable and in demand. Project: a small medallion lakehouse in a Fabric trial, documented end to end. Our data engineer roadmap sequences it properly.
The one-project rule
For every certification, one project, finished, documented and public. Finished means it has an end state you can show in two minutes. Documented means a README or a one-page note explaining the data, the decisions and what you would do next. Public means a link: a GitHub repository, a published Power BI report, or a PDF on your LinkedIn profile.
Interviewers ask about projects far more than about exam content. A fresher who can say why they modelled a table a certain way, and what broke when they did it the other way first, is already behaving like an analyst.
Presenting it on Naukri and LinkedIn
- Put the certification in the Certifications section with the credential ID and the verification link from your Microsoft Learn profile.
- Add CertTulen course certificates with their unique ID and the link to our verify page, so a recruiter can check them without emailing anyone.
- Write the project as a one-paragraph entry under Projects, with the link, and name the tools exactly: Power Query, DAX, Fabric Lakehouse, Azure Functions.
- In the headline, lead with the role you want and the certification code: "Aspiring Data Analyst | PL-300 Certified" reads better to a recruiter's search than a list of adjectives.
- Keep a single PDF portfolio you can attach to applications, two pages at most.
Budgeting the exam
Exam fees in India are charged in INR and students sometimes qualify for discounted pricing; this post keeps the details current. Plan the fee into your preparation so that you book the exam the week your course ends. Freshers who wait for the perfect moment to book usually do not book.
A ninety-day plan
- Weeks 1 to 6: the course for your chosen certification, live, with every lab done twice: once in class, once at home on your own data.
- Weeks 7 and 8: the project, built from scratch, documented, published.
- Week 9: practice assessments and review, exam booked.
- Week 10: the exam.
- Weeks 11 to 13: profile updated, applications out, project link in every one of them.

Frequently asked questions
Which Microsoft certification is best for a fresher in India?
The one that matches the job you are applying for. For data analyst and MIS roles it is PL-300. For cloud or infrastructure support roles start with AZ-900. For AI-adjacent roles pair AI-900 with a Python certificate. A fundamentals certificate alone rarely changes an outcome; a role-based one plus a project does.
Should I take several fundamentals exams to strengthen my CV?
No. Recruiters read a row of fundamentals badges as breadth without depth. One role-based certification, one fundamentals certification that supports it, and one project you can talk about for ten minutes is a far stronger profile than five badges.
Can a non-computer-science graduate do this?
Yes. Power BI and Python are taught from scratch in our batches, and commerce, science and arts graduates regularly do well in analyst roles because they understand the business questions. Read our post on moving into Python from a non-IT background for the detail.
How do recruiters verify a certification?
Microsoft credentials carry a credential ID and a shareable link from your Microsoft Learn profile; put both on your CV and LinkedIn. CertTulen Academy course certificates carry a unique ID that anyone can check on our verify page, so include that link too.
