Data Engineer Roadmap for India (2026): From Python to Fabric
Data engineer roadmap India 2026: learn Python, SQL, PySpark and Microsoft Fabric in the right order, with DP-700 and the certifications that matter. By CertT
The short answer
To become a data engineer in India, build skills in this order: Python → SQL → PySpark → Microsoft Fabric (pipelines and lakehouses), and validate with PCEP/PCAP for Python and DP-700 for Fabric. Data engineering is more technical than analysis — it is about building the pipelines that move and transform data at scale — but a structured path makes it very achievable. Python is close to essential, so that is where you start.
The roadmap, step by step
Step 1 — Python
The foundation language of modern data engineering. Learn it properly — variables, logic, collections, functions, error handling. Aim for PCEP, then PCAP for depth.
Step 2 — SQL
Non-negotiable. Beyond analyst-level querying, engineers need strong joins, window functions, CTEs, and an understanding of how databases perform.
Step 3 — Pandas, then PySpark
Start with Pandas for data wrangling on a single machine, then scale the same thinking to PySpark when data outgrows one machine: DataFrames, Spark SQL, partitions, and job tuning.
Step 4 — Microsoft Fabric (the platform)
Where it comes together for the Microsoft stack: ingestion, pipelines, dataflows, Spark notebooks, lakehouses and warehouses, and orchestration. Validate with DP-700.
Step 5 — Supporting skills
Version control (Git), an understanding of data modelling, and awareness of data quality and governance.
Certifications that matter
- PCEP / PCAP (Python) — prove your programming foundation
- DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer) — the core engineering credential for the Microsoft stack
- DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer) — useful if you also touch the analytics/modelling side
Why PySpark then Fabric is the efficient route
Fabric notebooks run Spark, so PySpark skills transfer one-to-one into Fabric. Learning PySpark first means DP-700's engineering material builds on something you already understand, rather than being entirely new.
Realistic timeline
Data engineering is a larger undertaking than analysis. Expect several months to a year of focused learning and practice to reach job-ready depth, depending on your starting point — especially the programming foundation.
How CertTulen fits
CertTulen runs Python (PCEP/PCAP), the Python-and-PySpark data-engineering track, and the Fabric path to DP-700 — the complete engineering stack — so you can follow this roadmap continuously with live, hands-on instruction.

Frequently asked questions
Is data engineering harder than data analysis?
It is generally more technical because it involves programming, distributed processing and building pipelines rather than mainly reporting. That said, it is very learnable with a structured path. Many people start as analysts and grow into engineering, or begin directly with Python and SQL foundations.
Do I need Python for data engineering?
Yes. Python is close to essential for modern data engineering, especially because PySpark and tools like Microsoft Fabric notebooks use it. A solid Python foundation (PCEP level) is the right starting point before PySpark and Fabric.
Which certification suits a data engineer in India?
DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer) is the most directly relevant certification for the Microsoft data stack that many Indian enterprises use. PCEP/PCAP for Python and strong SQL underpin it. Together they form a credible data-engineering profile.
