AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals in India: Who Should Take It, What It Covers and How to Pass First Time
AZ-900 exam guide for Indian candidates: skills measured, exam format and duration, who should take Azure Fundamentals, a 4-week study plan, and what to take next.
What AZ-900 is, and is not
AZ-900 leads to Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals. It is a knowledge exam about cloud concepts and the Azure platform, not a hands-on test of deploying things. You are expected to know what the services are for, how Azure is organised and priced, and how it is governed and secured, at the level a well-briefed project manager or a first-year engineer would.
That makes it the broadest Microsoft certification and the easiest to misjudge. People fail it by underestimating the breadth, not the depth.
Who takes it in India
- Non-technical professionals who work around cloud projects: sales and pre-sales, project and delivery managers, procurement and finance teams who approve Azure bills.
- Students and freshers who want a recognised credential on a CV before campus placements. It pairs well with a Python or Power BI certificate; see our fresher guide.
- IT staff moving from on-premises work who need the vocabulary before a role-based certification.
- Teams starting a Fabric or Power BI programme, because workspaces, capacities, tenants and governance all rest on Azure concepts.
Skills measured
The official study guide groups the exam into three areas:
- Describe cloud concepts. What cloud computing is, the shared responsibility model, public, private and hybrid clouds, consumption-based pricing, and the benefits people actually mean when they say scalability, elasticity, reliability and predictability. IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, with examples of each.
- Describe Azure architecture and services. Regions, availability zones and region pairs, resource groups, subscriptions and management groups, compute options including virtual machines, containers and Azure Functions, networking basics, storage services and tiers, and identity with Microsoft Entra ID, including conditional access and role-based access control.
- Describe Azure management and governance. Cost management, the pricing and total cost of ownership calculators, tags, Azure Policy, resource locks, the Azure portal, Cloud Shell and Azure Arc, and the monitoring tools: Azure Advisor, Service Health and Azure Monitor.
For Indian organisations the regions topic is worth a closer look. Azure has regions in India, and data residency decisions for regulated sectors turn on exactly the concepts this area tests.
How the exam runs
- Delivered by Pearson VUE, online or at a test centre.
- Fundamentals exams are shorter than role-based ones: budget around 45 minutes for the questions.
- Multiple-choice, multiple-select, drag-and-drop and hot-area questions; no labs.
- Passing score of 700 on the 1 to 1000 scale.
- Fees in India are set in INR; this post tracks the current pricing and the discount routes, including offers for students.
A four-week plan
Week 1: Concepts. Work through the cloud concepts module on Microsoft Learn and write your own one-line definition of every term in it. If you cannot explain elasticity to a colleague in one sentence, you do not know it yet.
Week 2: Services, with your hands. Create a free Azure account. Build a resource group, a storage account and the smallest virtual machine, look at every blade, then delete them. Read the compute, storage and networking modules alongside.
Week 3: Governance and cost. Open Cost Management on your free account. Create a budget and an alert. Apply a tag and a resource lock, and read a built-in Azure Policy definition. Then study Entra ID, conditional access and RBAC until the difference between authentication and authorisation is obvious.
Week 4: Practice. Take the free practice assessment on Microsoft Learn twice, a few days apart. Read the documentation page for every question you miss. Book the exam.
Where candidates slip
- Confusing availability zones with region pairs, and resource groups with subscriptions. Draw the hierarchy once.
- Treating pricing as trivia. The exam asks what affects cost and which tool answers which question; the two calculators and Cost Management are different things.
- Skipping Entra ID because it feels like an admin topic. It is a sizeable part of the architecture area.
- Reading only. Twenty minutes in the portal fixes more misconceptions than two hours of video.
After AZ-900
The certification does not expire, so there is nothing to renew. Add it to your profile, then pick the role-based exam that matches your work. For data roles that is PL-300 or the Fabric pair, DP-600 and DP-700. For AI work, AI-900 is the natural companion.
Learn it live
CertTulen Academy India runs AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals as a short, live, instructor-led course taught by a Microsoft Certified Trainer, online in IST or on-site for teams. The sessions are built around the three skill areas with portal walkthroughs rather than slides, and end with a practice assessment and review. Fees are in INR, companies get GST-compliant invoices, and groups of students can ask us about a college batch.
Frequently asked questions
Is AZ-900 worth it if I am not in a technical role?
Yes, and that is the role it was designed for. Sales, pre-sales, project management, procurement and finance staff who deal with cloud spend or cloud projects benefit from understanding the vocabulary, the pricing model and the shared-responsibility idea. Technical candidates often treat it as a quick first step before a role-based exam.
Does the AZ-900 certification expire?
No. Microsoft fundamentals certifications, including AZ-900, do not expire and need no renewal. Role-based certifications such as PL-300 or DP-600 are the ones with a one-year validity.
Do I need an Azure account to prepare?
It helps more than any video. A free Azure account comes with a set of free services and credit for a limited period, which is enough to create a resource group, a storage account and a virtual machine, and to see the cost management and governance screens the exam asks about. Delete what you create afterwards.
What should I take after AZ-900?
Follow the job, not the catalogue. Data people move to PL-300 or the Fabric exams DP-600 and DP-700. Infrastructure people go to AZ-104. Anyone working with AI features takes AI-900 and then the AI engineer track. The fundamentals exam is a door, not a destination.
