PL-300 Exam Guide for India (2026): Syllabus, Study Plan and Exam Day
Everything an Indian candidate needs for PL-300 (Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst): skills measured, exam format, an 8-week weekend study plan, online proctoring tips and renewal.
What PL-300 certifies
PL-300 is the exam behind the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential. It tests whether you can take raw data from several sources, shape it, build a model that answers questions correctly, design reports people actually use, and run those reports properly inside the Power BI service.
In India it has become the default line on data analyst job descriptions, from MIS and reporting roles in mid-sized companies to analyst positions at IT services firms and captive centres. That is the practical reason to take it: recruiters search for it by code.
Who it is for
- Analysts and MIS executives who already build reports in Excel and want the credential that matches the work.
- Finance, operations and sales teams moving from spreadsheet reporting to dashboards.
- Freshers choosing a first certification with a visible job market. Read our fresher guide for how to pair it with a portfolio.
- Developers and DBAs adding reporting to their stack, who usually find the modelling and DAX sections the real work.
If you are deciding between Power BI and the wider Fabric track, Microsoft Fabric vs Power BI explains where PL-300 sits relative to DP-600.
Skills measured
Microsoft publishes a study guide for every exam listing the skills measured. For PL-300 they fall into four areas:
- Prepare the data. Connecting to sources, profiling data, cleaning and transforming it in Power Query, and handling errors and data types.
- Model the data. Designing a star schema, relationships and cardinality, writing DAX measures, calculated columns and tables, and optimising model performance.
- Visualise and analyse the data. Choosing visuals, building reports and dashboards, applying filters, bookmarks, drill-through and accessibility, and using the analytics features.
- Manage and secure Power BI. Workspaces, datasets and semantic models, row-level security, sharing, refresh and sensitivity settings.
The weighting of each area is published on Microsoft Learn and changes from time to time, so check the current study guide rather than relying on an old dump. The modelling area is where most Indian candidates lose marks, because it is the part Excel experience does not prepare you for.
How the exam works
- Delivered by Pearson VUE, online with a remote proctor or at a test centre in most Indian cities.
- Around 100 minutes for the exam itself, with extra time for the instructions and survey.
- Typically between 40 and 60 questions, including a case study section with several questions about one scenario, plus multiple-choice, drag-and-drop and hot-area formats.
- Scored on a scale of 1 to 1000 with a passing score of 700. The score is scaled, so it is not a straight percentage.
- Available in English and several other languages. Indian candidates almost always sit it in English.
Exam fees in India are set in INR and differ from the US dollar price. Our Microsoft certification exam cost in India post explains the pricing, the taxes and the discount routes, and is kept up to date separately from this guide.
An eight-week plan for a working week
This plan assumes you work full time and can give the exam two evenings and one weekend day a week. It mirrors the way our own weekend batches are sequenced.
Weeks 1 and 2: Power Query. Connect to Excel, CSV, a database and a web source. Learn the transformation steps until you can read the applied-steps list like a recipe. Practise unpivoting, merging and appending, and fixing data types deliberately rather than accepting the defaults.
Weeks 3 and 4: Modelling. Build a star schema from a flat file. Create a proper date table and mark it as such. Learn the difference between a calculated column and a measure, then write the standard measures: totals, year-to-date, previous period, percentage of total. Understand filter context before touching CALCULATE.
Weeks 5 and 6: Reports. Build one report end to end on data you care about. Add slicers, bookmarks, drill-through and tooltips. Then rebuild the same report for a mobile layout. Learn the visuals you would never choose on your own, because the exam asks about them.
Week 7: The service. Publish to a workspace, set up a scheduled refresh, create an app, apply row-level security and test it with the view-as feature. Share with a colleague and watch what they can and cannot see.
Week 8: Practice and review. Take the free Microsoft Learn practice assessment, then study every question you got wrong by reading the documentation, not by memorising the answer. Book the exam for the following week while the material is fresh.
Mistakes we see in every batch
- Learning DAX as syntax. Candidates memorise CALCULATE patterns without understanding filter context, then fail the questions that change one word in the scenario.
- Skipping the service. The management and security area is small but it is the easiest to score in, and most self-taught candidates never publish a report.
- Practising on perfect data. Real exam scenarios include duplicates, nulls and wrong types. Deliberately dirty your practice data.
- Memorising dumps. Besides the risk to your certification, dumps teach you old questions for a current exam. The free practice assessment is a better test of readiness.
Exam day, online, from India
- Do the system test on the Pearson VUE site a few days before, on the same machine and connection you will use.
- Pick a room you can lock. The proctor will ask you to show the whole room and the desk with your webcam or phone, and anyone walking in can void the exam.
- Clear the desk completely. No second monitor, no paper, no phone within reach after check-in.
- Your ID must match the name on your Microsoft certification profile exactly, including spelling and middle names. Fix the profile a week before, not on the day.
- Check in 30 minutes early. Indian broadband is usually fine; a mobile hotspot as backup is sensible.
- If a power cut or a dropped connection ends the session, contact Pearson VUE support straight away. Keep the case number.
After you pass
Your badge appears in your Microsoft Learn profile within a day or two. Add the credential to LinkedIn and Naukri with the credential ID, and attach the report you built during preparation to your profile or portfolio. Set a calendar reminder for six months before expiry: renewal is free and online, and our renewal guide walks through it.

Frequently asked questions
Is PL-300 enough to get a Power BI job in India?
It gets your CV past the first filter, because many postings list it by name. What gets you hired is the work you can show alongside it: one or two reports built on realistic data, with a sensible model, documented measures and a short explanation of the decisions behind them. Treat the certification and the portfolio as one project.
Do I need SQL or coding to pass PL-300?
No coding is required. You need to be comfortable with Power Query transformations and with writing DAX measures, both of which are taught from scratch in a proper course. SQL is useful on the job and worth learning next, but the exam does not test it.
Can I take the PL-300 exam from home in India?
Yes. Microsoft exams are delivered by Pearson VUE either at a test centre or online with a remote proctor. Online delivery needs a quiet private room, a stable connection, a webcam, and a government photo ID whose name exactly matches your Microsoft certification profile.
How long does the PL-300 certification stay valid?
One year from the date you earn it. Renewal is free: an online assessment on Microsoft Learn that opens six months before the expiry date. Pass it and the certification extends for another year, so the exam fee is paid once.
