Microsoft Certification Roadmap 2026: Which Data & AI Certification Should You Take?
Microsoft certification roadmap 2026: choose between AI-900, PL-900, PL-300, DP-600, DP-700 and Applied Skills for data and AI careers in India. By CertTulen
The short answer
There is no single "best" Microsoft certification — the right one depends on the role you are targeting. In 2026, the practical map for data and AI is: start with a fundamentals exam for grounding (AI-900, PL-900 or AZ-900), then move to a role-based associate certification that matches your direction — PL-300 for Power BI analysts, DP-600 for Fabric analytics engineers, DP-700 for Fabric data engineers — and use Applied Skills credentials to prove specific hands-on capabilities along the way.
Step 1 — Pick a direction
- Analytics / reporting → Power BI and modelling
- Data engineering → pipelines, Spark, Fabric engineering
- AI / applied AI → AI concepts, then AI engineering or applied AI tools
- Business / low-code → Power Platform
Step 2 — Start with fundamentals (optional but recommended)
- AI-900 — Azure AI Fundamentals (AI direction)
- PL-900 — Power Platform Fundamentals (business/low-code)
- AZ-900 — Azure Fundamentals (cloud grounding)
These are affordable, never expire, and give quick momentum.
Step 3 — Choose your associate certification
- PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) — the analyst standard; connect, model, DAX, visualise, publish
- DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer) — prepare and model data for analytics in Fabric
- DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer) — build ingestion and transformation pipelines in Fabric
A common, effective sequence is PL-300 → DP-600, adding the Fabric layer on top of solid Power BI skills.
Step 4 — Prove specific skills with Applied Skills
Microsoft Applied Skills are scenario-based, hands-on credentials — for example the Fabric-focused DP-601/602/603 style assessments — that validate a specific capability without a full exam. They pair well with role-based certifications to round out a profile.
Where AI tools fit
Alongside Microsoft's certifications, applied-AI skills — Copilot, Claude, Gemini, prompt engineering, automation — increasingly matter for every role. They aren't a substitute for a data certification, but together they make a strong 2026 profile.
How to choose in one minute
Ask: what job do I want next? Then pick the associate certification that names that role, add a fundamentals exam if you are new, and layer applied-AI skills on top. CertTulen runs every certification in this roadmap, so you can plan a continuous path and adjust as your goals sharpen.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Microsoft certification to start with?
For most beginners, a fundamentals exam is the right start: AI-900 if you are drawn to AI, PL-900 for the Power Platform, or AZ-900 for cloud. They are affordable, never expire, and build the vocabulary the role-based certifications assume.
Do I need fundamentals before an associate certification?
Not formally — you can attempt an associate exam directly. But fundamentals give useful grounding and quick wins, and for career switchers they make the associate material much easier to absorb. Experienced professionals sometimes skip straight to the associate exam.
Is Power BI (PL-300) still relevant with Fabric certifications available?
Yes. Power BI remains central, and PL-300 validates core analyst skills that also underpin DP-600. Many people take PL-300 first, then DP-600 to add the Fabric-specific layer. They reinforce each other rather than compete.
