GCC Jobs in India: The Skills Global Capability Centres Hire For

By Abirami Seeni8 min read

A Global Capability Centre (GCC) is a company's own unit in India that does work for its parent organisation, from software and cloud to data, security and finance operations. GCCs hire for the skills the parent's teams use every day, so the candidates who stand out can prove hands-on work, write clearly to colleagues abroad and understand the parent's business.

At a glance

  • What a GCC is: an offshore unit owned by the parent company, not a vendor serving many clients
  • Where they cluster: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and the National Capital Region, with government policy now pushing tier-2 cities
  • Main role families: software engineering, cloud and infrastructure, data and AI, cybersecurity, business operations and engineering research
  • Proof that helps: one role-based certification, one project you can explain in depth, and clear written English
  • Interview extras: stakeholder communication, ownership of live systems and knowledge of the parent's industry

What a GCC is, and how it differs from an IT services company

The government's December 2025 PIB backgrounder, From Policy to Prosperity: GCCs Leading India's Growth Journey, describes GCCs as offshore units set up by companies to deliver a range of services for their parent organisations. It notes that they have moved from support desks to research, design and development work. You will see them branded as technology centres, innovation centres or global business services.

The difference from an IT services job is who you work for.

Neither is better by default. A GCC suits people who want to go deep in one domain, such as banking, retail, healthcare or manufacturing, and stay with systems for years.

Policy is also moving GCCs beyond the metros. In the Union Budget 2025-26 speech, the Finance Minister announced that a national framework will be formulated as guidance to states for promoting GCCs in emerging tier-2 cities. Several states, including Karnataka, have also published GCC policies of their own. If you live outside the big cities, read our guide to building a tech career from a tier-2 city.

The role families GCCs hire for

Job titles vary, but most GCC openings fall into six families.

Software and product engineering

Building and maintaining the parent's applications, APIs and internal platforms. Expect questions on one language in depth, data structures, Git, testing and deploying to the cloud.

Cloud, infrastructure and reliability

Running the parent's cloud estate: identity, networking, virtual machines, containers, monitoring, backup and cost control. Many GCC teams own production systems, so troubleshooting under pressure matters as much as building.

Data, analytics and AI

Data engineers build pipelines and lakehouses. Analysts turn data into reports that managers in several countries use. AI engineers build and evaluate models and agents. SQL is the shared language across all three.

Cybersecurity and identity

Security operations, identity and access management, cloud security and data protection. These teams often handle compliance with laws in several countries at once.

Business operations

Finance and accounting, HR operations, procurement and supply chain. The tools are ERP systems, Excel and Power BI. Candidates who combine a commerce background with reporting skills are useful here.

Engineering research and development

The PIB backgrounder lists aerospace, defence, semiconductors and advanced manufacturing among the areas where engineering research and development work is growing. These roles want core engineering degrees plus software skills such as embedded programming, simulation or CAD.

Skills and certifications that signal readiness

A certification will not get you hired alone, but it tells a recruiter you know the vocabulary of the role. Pair it with a project.

Role familySkills to showCertification signal
Cloud and infrastructureEntra ID, networking, VMs, monitoringAZ-104
Data analyticsSQL, Power Query, DAX, modellingPL-300
Data engineeringSQL, PySpark, pipelines, lakehouseDP-700
SecurityIdentity, Defender, Purview basicsSC-900, then AZ-500
Software engineeringOne language, Git, cloud deploymentAZ-204
Business operationsExcel, Power BI, ERP processesPL-300

What the exams actually cover:

  • AZ-104 tests identities and governance, storage, compute, virtual networking, and monitoring. Microsoft expects familiarity with PowerShell, Azure CLI, the portal, and ARM templates or Bicep, according to the AZ-104 study guide.
  • PL-300 covers preparing, modelling and visualising data and managing Power BI, and expects you to be proficient in Power Query and DAX (PL-300 study guide).
  • DP-700 tests ingesting, transforming, securing and monitoring data in Microsoft Fabric with SQL, PySpark and KQL (DP-700 study guide).

All three need a score of 700 or greater to pass. Associate certifications expire annually and renew through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn, which is useful because GCC hiring managers often check that a certification is current.

What GCC interviews test beyond the syllabus

Technical rounds check what you know. The other rounds check whether colleagues in another country can rely on you.

Clear written communication

Much GCC work happens over email, chat and tickets with people you rarely meet. A common assignment is to write a status update or explain an incident. Practise writing short updates with three parts: what happened, what you did and what you need from the reader.

Working across time zones

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30. The UK is four and a half hours behind IST during British Summer Time and five and a half hours behind in winter. US Eastern Time is nine and a half to ten and a half hours behind. Meetings with UK teams usually land in your afternoon, and meetings with US teams in your late evening. Ask about shift timings early, and answer honestly about what you can sustain.

Ownership of live systems

Many GCC teams build and run their own systems. Interviewers ask about something that broke and how you found the cause. If you have only done coursework, break your own lab on purpose and practise explaining the fix.

Knowing the parent's business

Read the parent company's annual report or investor pages before the interview. Know what it sells, who its customers are and which regulations shape its data, such as India's DPDP Act or Europe's GDPR. Our article on the DPDP Act and AI tools is a good primer on the Indian side.

A 12-week preparation plan

Weeks 1 to 2: pick one role family. Collect 15 GCC job descriptions for that family from parent companies' careers sites. Highlight the skills that repeat.

Weeks 3 to 8: learn and certify. Work through the official Microsoft Learn path for your exam, do every lab and take the free practice assessment. Book the exam when your practice scores are consistently comfortable, not on the first attempt.

Weeks 9 to 10: build one GCC-style project. Make it look like real internal work: a cost dashboard for an Azure subscription, a Power BI report with row-level security for regional managers, or a pipeline that loads daily files into a lakehouse. Write a README a stranger could follow.

Weeks 11 to 12: rehearse. Prepare five short stories in situation, task, action, result form. Practise a technical walkthrough of your project in ten minutes, and a written update in five.

If you are a fresher, MeitY and nasscom's FutureSkills Prime portal also lists courses aligned with national skill standards in areas such as cloud computing.

Finding openings, and staying safe

  • Careers sites: search the parent company's global careers page and filter to Indian cities.
  • LinkedIn: follow the India centre's own page; hiring managers often post openings there.
  • Referrals: a referral from a current employee usually gets your resume read by a person.
  • Early-career programmes: some GCCs run campus and graduate hiring; check the careers site's early-career section.
  • Communities: technology user groups and meetups put you in a room with people who work at these centres.

Be careful with offers that ask you to pay for training, laptops or "processing". Genuine employers do not charge candidates to be hired. Check that the email comes from the company's own domain and that the role appears on its careers site.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a GCC and an IT services company?+

A GCC is owned by the company it works for, so you build and run that company's own products, platforms and operations. An IT services company is a vendor that delivers projects for many clients. GCC roles tend to go deep into one business domain, while services roles give you exposure to different clients and industries over time.

Do Global Capability Centres hire freshers?+

Some do, usually through campus drives, graduate programmes or internships listed in the early-career section of the parent company's careers site. Freshers improve their chances with one relevant certification, a project they can explain line by line, and strong written English, because GCC teams work closely with colleagues in other countries.

Which certification helps most for GCC jobs?+

The one that matches the role family you are targeting. AZ-104 suits cloud and infrastructure roles, PL-300 suits analytics and business operations roles, and DP-700 suits data engineering. Read 15 job descriptions in your chosen family first, then choose the certification whose skills appear most often, and pair it with a hands-on project.

Do GCC jobs involve night shifts?+

It depends on the team and where its stakeholders sit. Teams working with the UK often meet in the Indian afternoon, while teams working with the US may need late-evening calls. Support and operations roles can involve rotating shifts. Ask about timings during the interview so you can judge whether the pattern suits you.

Are GCC jobs only in Bengaluru and Hyderabad?+

Those cities, along with Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and the National Capital Region, are the largest clusters. The Union Budget 2025-26 announced a national framework to guide states on promoting GCCs in emerging tier-2 cities, and some roles are hybrid or remote. Check each listing for its location and office attendance rules.

How can I tell whether a GCC job offer is genuine?+

Confirm the opening appears on the parent company's official careers site and that emails come from the company's own domain. Genuine employers do not ask candidates to pay for training, equipment or processing. If anything feels wrong, contact the company through the details on its official website rather than replying to the message.
