Azure Career Path in India: Roles from Fundamentals to Architect

By Abirami Seeni7 min read

Most Azure careers in India follow one ladder: fundamentals (AZ-900), then Azure administrator (AZ-104), then a specialism such as development (AI-200), security (SC-500), networking (AZ-700) or DevOps (AZ-400), and finally solutions architect (AZ-305, which also requires the AZ-104 certification). Expect each step to take months of hands-on practice, not a weekend of exam questions.

At a glance

  • Start: AZ-900 is optional, but useful for freshers, non-IT graduates and anyone in sales, support or management
  • The hub: AZ-104 is the prerequisite for Azure Solutions Architect Expert and one route into DevOps Engineer Expert
  • Changed in 2026: AZ-204 retired on 31 July 2026 (replaced by AI-200), AZ-500 retired on 31 August 2026 (replaced by SC-500), and AZ-800 and AZ-801 retired on 30 September 2026 (AZ-802 now covers Windows Server)
  • Pass mark: 700 on role-based exams
  • Renewal: associate and expert certifications renew free online every year

The ladder in one table

StepRoleCertificationRough time to be job-ready
1Cloud support, fresher rolesAZ-9002 to 4 weeks part-time
2Azure administratorAZ-1043 to 6 months with regular labs
3Cloud developerAI-2003 to 6 months if you already code
3Security engineerSC-5003 to 6 months after admin work
3Network engineerAZ-7002 to 4 months with a networking background
3DevOps engineerAZ-4003 to 6 months after admin or developer work
4Solutions architectAZ-305after a few years of hands-on Azure work

The times are guidance from a trainer's view for someone studying alongside a job, not survey data. Your pace depends on your background and, above all, on how many hours you spend in the Azure portal, CLI and templates rather than reading.

Step 1: Fundamentals and cloud support roles

Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) covers cloud concepts, core Azure services such as compute, networking and storage, and the tools to secure, govern and administer Azure. Microsoft describes it as a common starting point in a journey towards a career in Azure. It is not a prerequisite for anything, so experienced engineers can skip it.

Who it suits: final-year students, freshers, non-IT graduates moving into tech, pre-sales and account managers, and support staff who need to speak the language. Entry roles where it helps include cloud support associate, monitoring or NOC analyst, and service desk roles at managed service providers.

What to practise while you study: create a resource group, deploy a small virtual machine and a storage account in an Indian region, set a budget alert, and delete everything afterwards. Our AZ-900 guide for India covers the exam itself.

Step 2: Azure administrator, the hub role

Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) is the most important step on the ladder. Microsoft expects candidates to implement, manage and monitor an Azure environment, including virtual networks, storage, compute, identity, security and governance, and to have experience with PowerShell, Azure CLI, the portal, ARM templates or Bicep, and Microsoft Entra ID.

Typical jobs at this level are cloud operations engineer, Azure administrator and L2 or L3 cloud support at service companies, global capability centres and enterprises. The labs that prepare you best are the ones you will do at work:

  • Build a hub and spoke virtual network with peering and network security groups
  • Assign Azure roles at different scopes and test what each user can see
  • Configure backup and restore a virtual machine
  • Send diagnostic logs to a Log Analytics workspace and write a simple KQL query
  • Redeploy the whole set-up from a Bicep file

Because AZ-104 is the prerequisite for the architect certification, every later step builds on it. Skipping real admin experience is the most common reason people struggle at the expert level.

Step 3: Choose a specialism

Developer: AI-200

The Azure Developer Associate certification (AZ-204) retired on 31 July 2026. Its replacement, Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate (AI-200), is a different exam, not a renamed one. Its skills measured, updated on 7 October 2026, cover containerised solutions (Container Registry, Container Apps, AKS), AI solutions using Azure Cosmos DB for NoSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL with vector search and Azure Managed Redis, messaging with Service Bus and Event Grid, Azure Functions, Key Vault, OpenTelemetry and KQL. Microsoft lists Python among the expected skills. If you are a developer who wants to build AI applications and agents rather than back-end services, look at AI-103 as well.

Security: SC-500

The Azure Security Engineer Associate certification (AZ-500) retired on 31 August 2026. Microsoft replaced it with Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate (SC-500), available since 21 July 2026. It covers securing access with Microsoft Entra ID and Key Vault, regulatory compliance, storage, database, network and compute security, securing AI solutions, and managing security posture. Microsoft expects practical Azure administration experience and familiarity with Microsoft 365 administration. If security is new to you, SC-900 is a gentle first step.

Networking: AZ-700

Azure Network Engineer Associate suits people from routing, switching and firewall backgrounds. It covers core network infrastructure, hybrid connectivity, application delivery, private access to Azure services and network security. In India, where many enterprises run hybrid set-ups with on-premises data centres, this is a strong niche.

DevOps: AZ-400

DevOps Engineer Expert needs the AZ-400 exam plus a prerequisite associate certification; check the certification page for the current list. Build and release pipelines carry the most weight in the exam, at 50 to 55%, and Microsoft expects experience with both GitHub and Azure DevOps.

Windows Server hybrid: AZ-802

For administrators with years of on-premises Windows Server experience, AZ-802 (Administering Windows Server) replaces the retired AZ-800 and AZ-801 pair. It covers Active Directory Domain Services, hybrid management with Azure Arc, virtual machines, storage, security and monitoring.

Step 4: Solutions architect (AZ-305)

Azure Solutions Architect Expert requires passing AZ-305 and holding an active Azure Administrator Associate certification. Passing AZ-305 alone does not award the certification. The exam was updated on 17 April 2026 and weighs four areas: identity, governance and monitoring (25 to 30%), data storage (20 to 25%), business continuity (15 to 20%) and infrastructure (30 to 35%).

The exam tests judgement, and so do architect interviews. Expect questions such as: which region would you choose for a workload with Indian data residency requirements, how would you design disaster recovery, and what would it cost. You answer those well only after you have built, broken and fixed real environments.

Making the path work in India

Practise in Indian regions. Azure has Central India (Pune), South India (Chennai), West India (Mumbai) and India South Central (Hyderabad) in its regions list. Central India and India South Central offer availability zones; South India and West India do not. The pairs are not all symmetrical: Central India pairs with South India, West India pairs with South India, and India South Central pairs with Central India. These details turn up in design discussions and interviews.

Know who is hiring for what. Managed service providers value AZ-104 and operations skills. Global capability centres often want depth in one specialism plus automation. Product companies care most about developer and DevOps skills. Read job descriptions in your target city and match your next certification to them.

Build a small public portfolio. A GitHub repository with Bicep templates, a hub and spoke network, a pipeline that deploys an app, and a short README explaining your design choices is more convincing than a row of badges.

Keep certifications active. Renewal is free once a year through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn; our renewal guide explains the process.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Collecting fundamentals badges without labs. Several fundamentals certificates do not replace one associate certification earned with real practice.
  • Ignoring networking. Many broken Azure deployments come down to DNS, routing or a network security group. Every role needs the basics.
  • Studying retired content. Notes and question banks for AZ-204 or AZ-500 no longer match any exam you can book. Use the current study guide for the exam you will sit.
  • Booking AZ-305 too early. Without real administration experience, the architect exam becomes a memory test you are likely to fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need AZ-900 before AZ-104?+

No. AZ-900 is not a prerequisite for any Azure certification. It helps freshers and non-technical learners understand cloud concepts and Azure terminology, but if you already work with servers, networks or Azure, you can go straight to AZ-104, which is the real foundation for administrator, DevOps and architect roles.

What replaced AZ-204 and AZ-500?+

AZ-204 and the Azure Developer Associate certification retired on 31 July 2026; the replacement is Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate, exam AI-200. AZ-500 and Azure Security Engineer Associate retired on 31 August 2026; the replacement is Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate, exam SC-500. Both new exams cover different skills, so use their current study guides.

How long does it take to become an Azure solutions architect?+

There is no fixed time, but architect roles usually follow several years of hands-on work in administration, development or infrastructure. The certification itself needs an active AZ-104 certification plus a pass in AZ-305. Most people do best by working as an administrator or engineer first, then preparing for AZ-305 once they make design decisions at work.

Can a fresher get an Azure job with certifications alone?+

Certifications help you get shortlisted, but interviewers test whether you can actually do the work. Pair AZ-900 or AZ-104 with a small public portfolio of labs, such as a Bicep template for a network, a backed-up virtual machine and a monitoring query, and be ready to explain every design choice you made.

Do Azure certifications expire?+

Associate and expert certifications, such as AZ-104 and Azure Solutions Architect Expert, are valid for a year and can be renewed free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn before they expire. Fundamentals certifications such as AZ-900 do not need renewal. Retired certifications stay on your transcript until their expiry date but cannot be renewed.
