Best Free AI for Students in India: Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini?

By Abirami Seeni7 min read

For Indian college students in October 2026, the best free AI plan depends on the task. Claim Google's free year of AI Plus if you are 18 or older and eligible, use ChatGPT's study mode for practice and quizzes, and use Claude for long readings, writing feedback and code explanations. All three free plans are good for study. Their age rules, limits and privacy settings are what differ.

What each free plan actually includes

Claude Free

Anthropic's pricing page lists chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory across conversations, connections to your apps, artifacts (documents and small apps Claude builds beside the chat), and access to Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Free usage is a session-based limit that resets every five hours, and the number of messages varies with demand.

The catch for school students: a Claude account requires you to be at least 18 years old. For learning, open the style menu next to the model selector and pick Explanatory, which Anthropic describes as educational, for learning new concepts.

ChatGPT Free

The ChatGPT pricing page lists unlimited text chats with the current default model, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research, memory and Codex access. Study mode works across plans on web, iOS and Android: type @study or pick Study from the + menu. It asks guiding questions and checks your understanding instead of handing over answers. Quizzes and flashcards were added to all plans in August and September 2026.

Two things to know. ChatGPT needs you to be 13 or older, and under-18 users need a parent's or guardian's permission. And since late August 2026, OpenAI has been showing ads to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans in India.

Gemini Free

Google's subscriptions page lists, for the free plan, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of storage. Gemini's learning tools include Guided Learning, a step-by-step tutoring mode you open from Add files, then More tools. The free plan has a 32k-token context window, so a very long document may need to be split into parts.

The Gemini student offer: worth claiming if you qualify

On 20 August 2026, Google announced one year of Google AI Plus free for eligible college students in India. AI Plus gives roughly twice the free usage, a 128k-token context window, video generation and 400 GB of storage.

The rules, from Google's offer terms:

  • You must be 18 or older and enrolled at a higher education institution.
  • Your student status is verified by SheerID, a third-party service.
  • You need a personal Google Account. School-issued Workspace for Education accounts and supervised accounts are not eligible.
  • A payment method is required at sign-up. Unless you cancel before the 12 months end, you are charged the standard monthly price.
  • Redeem by 31 December 2026.

Set a phone reminder for the month before your free year ends. It is the simplest way to avoid an unexpected charge on your card or UPI AutoPay.

Which plan for which study task

No single tool wins everything. This is how we suggest students divide the work.

Study taskGood free choiceWhy

Prompts that make free plans work harder

Free limits run out fastest when you send vague prompts and then ten follow-ups. One clear prompt saves messages:

  • "I am a second-year B.Com student. Explain depreciation methods using one example of a ₹50,000 machine. Then ask me three questions to check I understood."
  • "Here is my Python lab program and the error. Do not rewrite it. Point to the line that is wrong and explain why."
  • "Quiz me on Unit 3 of my DBMS syllabus. One question at a time. Tell me if I am wrong and why."

If you study in Tamil, Hindi or another Indian language, our guide to using AI tools in Indian languages covers what works and what to check.

Honesty rules every student should follow

AI is a tutor, not a ghostwriter. Your college's academic integrity policy and your faculty's instructions come first, and they differ between institutions, so read them before you use AI on graded work.

A few rules that keep you safe almost everywhere:

  1. Do the first attempt yourself. Ask AI to check, question or explain your work, not to produce it.
  2. Disclose when you are asked to. If an assignment or project report needs a note on AI use, say which tool you used and for what.
  3. Never paste exam papers or answer keys, and never use AI during a closed-book test.
  4. Verify every fact, formula and citation. All three tools can state wrong things confidently. Check against your textbook, class notes or the original source.
  5. Keep your drafts. Version history in your notes or Google Docs shows your own work if anyone asks.

Privacy settings to change on day one

Free plans can use your chats to improve their models unless you turn that off. Spend two minutes on these settings before you upload notes, ID cards, mark sheets or anything personal.

Claude

Go to Settings, then Privacy, and switch off Help improve our AI models. Anthropic then does not use new chats for training, though chats flagged by safety systems can still be used for safety work.

ChatGPT

Go to Settings, then Data Controls, and switch off Improve the model for everyone. Use Temporary Chat for one-off questions: those chats are deleted within 30 days and are not used for training. Under Settings, then Ad Controls, you can turn off ad personalisation. OpenAI says ads do not influence answers, and it also offers an ads-free Free option with lower limits.

Gemini

Keep activity is on by default and auto-deletes after 18 months. While it is on, Google can use your chats to improve its models, and a subset is read by human reviewers. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years even if you delete your activity. Turn off Keep activity, or use temporary chats, which are kept for 72 hours and not used for training.

Whatever you choose, do not paste Aadhaar numbers, bank details, passwords or other people's personal data into any chatbot.

How CertTulen Academy can help

CertTulen Academy runs short, live, instructor-led sessions that teach students to use AI well rather than just more. AI Fluency for Students covers prompting, checking answers and honest use with Claude. The Gemini Certified University Student course prepares you for Google's student certification and makes full use of the Gemini tools above. Colleges can also ask about a private cohort for a department. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 93618 83583 or use our contact page for a batch that suits your timetable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free Claude plan for students in India?+

Yes, but it is the same Free plan everyone gets, and you must be 18 or older. Anthropic does not list an individual student discount. Universities can buy Claude's Education plan for all their students and staff, so ask your college whether it has one before you pay for Pro yourself.

Is ChatGPT Go still free in India?+

Assume not. OpenAI ran a limited promotion that gave Indian users a year of Go free, but its current Go help page mentions no India offer, so treat Go as a paid plan today and check chatgpt.com/pricing for the live INR price. If you claimed the earlier offer, check your subscription settings for the date it ends.

Can school students under 18 use these AI tools?+

It depends on the tool. Claude requires users to be 18 or older. ChatGPT allows users from 13, with a parent's or guardian's permission until 18, and does not show ads to accounts identified as under 18. Gemini on a school account works only if the school's administrator enables it, and Google's free student offer is for students aged 18 and above.

How do I claim the free Google AI Plus offer as a student?+

Sign in with a personal Google Account, not your college Workspace account, and open Google's student offer page from the Gemini or Google One site. Verify your enrolment through SheerID, add a payment method, and redeem before 31 December 2026. Cancel before the 12 months end if you do not want to pay the standard monthly price afterwards.

Which free AI is best for learning to code?+

Any of the three can explain errors and concepts. Claude Free can run code, and ChatGPT Free includes limited Codex access. Verified students can also get GitHub Copilot Student at no cost through GitHub Education. Whatever you use, write your first attempt yourself and ask the AI to review it, or you will not build the skill interviews test.

Will using AI for assignments get me into trouble?+

It can, if you break your college's rules. Policies differ between institutions and even between courses, so read the assignment brief and ask your faculty when in doubt. Using AI to explain, quiz or check your own work is usually safer than submitting AI-written text, and keeping your drafts helps you show your own effort.
