AI in Tamil, Hindi and Other Indian Languages: What Works in 2026

By Abirami Seeni7 min read

Yes, you can use AI in Tamil, Hindi and most major Indian languages today. ChatGPT and the Gemini web app list Tamil and Hindi among their supported languages, Anthropic benchmarks Claude in Hindi, and Microsoft Copilot accepts Tamil for voice conversations but not yet for typed chat. For apps, Azure Translator and Azure Speech support Tamil. Quality varies, so check anything you publish.

"Listed" means the language appears on the vendor's own page. It tells you nothing about how natural the output sounds, which is why the rest of this guide is about testing and checking.

What "supported" really means

Vendors publish language lists for different things, and it pays to read which one you are looking at.

  • Microsoft separates typed prompts and responses from voice. Its Copilot supported languages page lists Hindi for typed chat with personal Microsoft accounts, not work or school accounts, and lists Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Bangla, Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi for voice conversations with a personal account. It also warns that you can see an unsupported-language message even when the interface is translated into your language.
  • OpenAI lists the languages ChatGPT's language setting supports, and the list includes Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi and Urdu.
  • Google lists supported languages for the Gemini web app, including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Punjabi and Urdu, and India is a supported country.
  • Anthropic publishes how Claude performs in other languages relative to English. Hindi and Bengali are in its multilingual support table; Tamil is not, though Anthropic says Claude is capable in many languages beyond those benchmarked and advises testing your own use case.

The practical lesson: a tool can accept Tamil without being good at the Tamil you need. Test it on your real task, with a native speaker reading the output, before you depend on it.

Writing in Tamil and Hindi

From a trainer's chair, these tasks tend to go well in Tamil and Hindi with any of the main assistants:

  • drafting notices, circulars, WhatsApp messages and emails
  • summarising an English document into Tamil or Hindi
  • simplifying difficult text for students or customers
  • changing tone, for example from stiff and official to warm and polite
  • turning a lesson into questions, examples and short explanations

Check these every time:

  • Grammar and spelling. In Tamil, look closely at consonant doubling (வல்லினம் மிகுதல்) and verb endings; in Hindi, at gender agreement and postpositions.
  • Register. Output often defaults to formal written language when your audience expects everyday speech, or the reverse.
  • Invented words and idioms. Literal translations of English idioms read oddly, and models sometimes coin words no Tamil or Hindi speaker uses.
  • Quotations. Never trust a quoted Thirukkural couplet, Bharathiyar line or doha without checking it against an authoritative text. Models can misquote or invent verses that look convincing.
  • Names and numbers. Place names, people's names and figures in lakh and crore are easy to garble. Ask the tool to keep every number exactly as given.

Translation: assistants or dedicated translators

General assistants are best when you care about meaning and tone more than word-for-word accuracy. Anthropic's own advice applies to every assistant: state the input and output languages explicitly, and ask for idiomatic language as a native speaker would write it. Give a short glossary for brand names, product terms and job titles, and say which English terms must stay in English.

Dedicated translation services suit volume and consistency. The Azure Translator language list covers Tamil and Hindi for text and document translation, along with Assamese, Bangla, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sindhi, Telugu and Urdu. Sanskrit and Santali were not on the list when we checked. Tamil and Hindi also support Custom Translator, which lets a business train translation on its own approved terminology, and transliteration between Tamil script and Latin letters, useful when customers type Tanglish.

A simple quality check works with either approach: translate the result back into English with a different tool and compare it with your original. Where the meaning drifts, ask a native speaker.

Speech and voice

For talking to an assistant, Copilot Voice on a personal Microsoft account is the clearest officially listed option for Tamil and several other Indian languages. Try it with your own accent, background noise and the way you naturally mix English into Tamil, because that mix is how many people actually speak.

For building a voice app, Azure Speech lists two Indian Tamil (ta-IN) voices, ValluvarNeural and PallaviNeural, and several Hindi (hi-IN) voices, as shown on the Azure Speech language and voice page. The same page lists Tamil voices for Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. Pick ta-IN for an Indian audience, since accent matters to listeners. Check the speech to text table on that page for the locale you need too, and test with real recordings from your users before launch. Our guide to AI chatbots and voice agents for Indian businesses covers the wider design.

How to prompt well in Tamil

  1. Name the language and the script. Write "reply in Tamil script, not English letters". Anthropic recommends native script over transliteration for the best results.
  2. Choose the register. Ask for formal written Tamil (எழுத்துத் தமிழ்) or everyday spoken Tamil (பேச்சுத் தமிழ்), and name the audience.
  3. Decide what stays in English. Tell the tool to keep terms like Excel or Power BI in English, or to give Tamil words with English in brackets.
  4. Show an example. Paste two lines in the tone you want; examples beat adjectives.
  5. Set a length and format. A word limit and a structure, such as three short paragraphs, keep output tight.
  6. Ask it to flag doubts. Requesting a list of words it is unsure about makes review faster.

Here is a prompt that puts those habits together. It asks the tool to act as an experienced Tamil teacher, rewrite an English notice in simple Tamil for class 8 students, keep technical words in English with a Tamil explanation in brackets, stay within 120 words and point out any words it is unsure of.

The same pattern works in Hindi. This one asks for a polite, simple Hindi rewrite of an email, keeps "invoice" and "login" in English, and insists on Devanagari script:

नीचे दिए गए ईमेल को विनम्र और सरल हिंदी में फिर से लिखिए।
तकनीकी शब्द जैसे "invoice" और "login" अंग्रेज़ी में ही रहने दें।
जवाब देवनागरी लिपि में दें, रोमन अक्षरों में नहीं।

Check before you trust, and protect personal data

  • Get a native speaker to review anything public, legal, medical, financial or exam-related. AI drafts; people sign off.
  • Keep the source text next to the translation in your files, so reviewers can compare.
  • Do not paste personal data such as Aadhaar numbers, student records or patient details into consumer AI tools. Use the business versions your organisation has approved, and read our guide to the DPDP Act and AI tools before you roll anything out at work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI chatbot is best for Tamil?+

There is no single winner for every task. ChatGPT and the Gemini web app both list Tamil as supported, and Claude often handles it although Tamil is not in Anthropic's benchmark table. Give each tool the same real task, such as rewriting one notice, and ask a native speaker to judge which output reads most naturally.

Can I talk to Microsoft Copilot in Tamil?+

Microsoft lists Tamil as a voice conversation language for Copilot with a personal Microsoft account. Tamil is not on its list of supported languages for typed prompts and responses, where Hindi is listed for personal accounts only. Check Microsoft's supported languages page again before you plan around it, because these lists change.

Is it better to type Tamil in Tamil script or in English letters?+

Use Tamil script when you want good Tamil output. Anthropic's guidance for Claude recommends submitting text in its native script rather than transliteration, and the habit helps with other assistants too. If your customers write in Tanglish, services such as Azure Translator can transliterate between Tamil script and Latin letters.

Can AI translate documents into Tamil or Hindi accurately?+

AI translation is usually good enough for a first draft and for understanding meaning, but not for anything legal, medical or public without review. Use a glossary for your key terms, translate the result back into English to spot drift, and have a fluent reader approve the final version before it goes out.

Is it safe to use AI tools with student or customer data in Indian languages?+

The language does not change the privacy risk. Avoid pasting Aadhaar numbers, student records or other personal data into consumer AI tools, and use the business versions your organisation has approved with clear data protection terms. Ask your data protection lead how India's DPDP rules apply to your use.
