Return to Tech After a Career Break: A 12-Week Plan for Women in India
You can return to tech after a career break in about 12 weeks if you treat it as a project: two weeks to choose a direction and set up, six weeks to refresh one skill set with hands-on work, two weeks to certify, and two weeks to build proof and apply. The plan answers the two questions hiring managers ask: are your skills current, and are you ready now?
At a glance
- Weeks 1 to 2: audit your experience, choose one path, set up your profiles
- Weeks 3 to 8: refresh one skill set through labs and one real project
- Weeks 9 to 10: take one certification exam that matches the path
- Weeks 11 to 12: publish your project, update LinkedIn, apply through three channels
- Time to plan for: 8 to 10 focused hours a week, in fixed slots
Who this plan is for
This guide is written for women in India coming back after time away for children, caring for parents, a spouse's transfer, health, or study. The plan works for anyone, but the sections on explaining the gap and finding flexible work are written with Indian workplaces in mind. If you left tech two years ago or ten, the method is the same; only the size of the refresh changes.
Start from a fair view of what you already have. Your earlier projects, your domain knowledge in banking, healthcare, retail or manufacturing, and the organisation skills a break often builds are all real assets. What has changed is the tooling: cloud platforms, Power BI and Microsoft Fabric, and AI assistants built into everyday software.
Step one: choose what you are returning to
Pick one path for these 12 weeks. Starting three at once is the most common reason a return stalls.
| Path | Good fit if you | First credential |
|---|---|---|
| Data analysis with Power BI | enjoyed reports, Excel and working with business teams | PL-300 |
| Cloud and infrastructure | worked in support, networks or servers | AZ-900, then AZ-104 |
| AI at work in your field | want practical skills for any role | AI-3025 course |
| Development or testing | wrote code before | language refresh and Git, then a cloud credential |
To check your choice, read ten current job descriptions for that role, in your city or listed as remote, and note the skills that repeat. That list tells you exactly what to refresh.
The 12-week plan
Weeks 1 to 2: audit, decide, set up
- Write one page on what you did before: projects, tools, domain and results. You will reuse it for your resume and interviews.
- Choose your path and the single credential that goes with it.
- Create or update your Microsoft Learn profile and LinkedIn profile.
- Agree your study slots with your family, for example early mornings or after the children sleep, and protect them like office hours.
Weeks 3 to 8: refresh one skill set, hands-on
Use the official study guide for your exam as the syllabus. The PL-300 study guide lists skills measured as of 20 April 2026, and the AZ-900 study guide as of 20 July 2026; both link to free Microsoft Learn modules and a free practice assessment.
- Do every lab yourself, then repeat it on your own data.
- Build one project from start to finish. For a Power BI path, a sales or expense dashboard using open data from data.gov.in or a domain you know well. For Azure, a small web app with a budget alert, a backup and a locked resource group.
- Use an AI assistant to explain concepts and quiz you, and check its answers against Microsoft's documentation.
- If you find it hard to keep going alone, a live batch adds structure and a deadline. Our article on how working professionals finish weekend Microsoft certification batches shows how others fit study around a full schedule.
Weeks 9 to 10: take the exam
Book the exam from its Microsoft Learn page, online or at a test centre; our guide to Microsoft exam costs in India covers the fee in rupees. Microsoft exams require a score of 700 or greater to pass. Fundamentals certifications such as AZ-900 do not expire, while associate certifications such as PL-300 are valid for a year and renewed through a free online assessment, according to Microsoft's credential expiration policies.
Weeks 11 to 12: proof and applications
- Publish your project with a short write-up: the problem, the data, the steps, the result and two screenshots.
- Update LinkedIn and your resume together. Our guide to showing a Microsoft certification on your resume and LinkedIn covers the exact wording and verification links.
- Apply through three channels at once: returnship programmes, referrals from former colleagues and managers, and direct applications. Tell your old network the specific role you want; "looking for opportunities" gets no replies, "looking for a Power BI analyst role in Chennai or remote" does.
How to explain the gap
On your resume
Give the break one honest line in your timeline, for example: "Career break, June 2021 to March 2025: full-time parenting. Refreshed skills in Power BI and earned PL-300 during the return." Showing only years to blur the dates usually invites more questions than it avoids.
On LinkedIn
LinkedIn lets you add a career break as an entry in the Experience section and choose a type, such as caregiving, full-time parenting, health and well-being, relocation or professional development. Use it, and add one line on what you did to stay current.
In the interview
Prepare three sentences and practise them aloud until they feel natural:
- What happened: "I took a break from 2021 to 2025 to care for my children."
- What you did to be ready: "In the last three months I refreshed my Power BI skills, earned PL-300 and built a dashboard I can show you."
- Why now: "I am ready for a full-time role now, and my support at home is in place."
Then stop and turn the conversation to the job. You do not owe more personal detail than you want to share. If you are asked about family plans or childcare, a short, calm answer that steers back to the role works well: "I have planned for that. What matters for this job is that I am available during your working hours, and I am."
Choosing a certification that actually helps
One credential that matches your target role is worth more than several unrelated ones.
- AZ-900 signals cloud literacy and suits people returning to IT support, infrastructure or non-technical roles in technology companies. It covers cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and management and governance.
- PL-300 is the main credential for Power BI analyst roles. It is demanding, which is why the plan gives it six weeks of preparation.
- AI-3025, Work smarter with AI, is a Microsoft course for business users that covers what AI can do, why grounding it in your own work matters, how agents handle multi-step tasks and how to review AI output with good judgement. Microsoft's course page says no prior AI experience is needed. It makes a useful confidence builder in the first fortnight, alongside your main path.
Be wary of any programme that promises placement in return for a large fee. Ask what you will build, who teaches it, and whether the credential at the end is one an employer can verify.
Flexible roles worth considering
- Returnships: some employers in India run returnship or career restart programmes for women. Search company careers pages for those terms and read the eligibility rules, such as minimum break length, before applying.
- Hybrid and remote roles: decide in advance which hours in India Standard Time you can commit to, especially for teams that work with colleagues in other countries.
- Contract and freelance work: dashboards for small businesses, report automation or cloud cost reviews give you recent experience to talk about.
- Training roles: corporate training and teaching assistant roles value people who can explain technology clearly.
- Research: if your background is in science or engineering research, the Department of Science and Technology's Women Scientists Programs include WOS-A and WOS-B, aimed at women with a career break who are not in regular employment, for applicants aged 27 to 57 with relaxation for some categories.
Looking after the practical side
Returning is as much about routine as skills. Treat study time as a fixed appointment and agree household support explicitly rather than hoping for it. Short daily sessions work better than weekend marathons that collapse when a child is unwell. Expect the first fortnight to feel slow; confidence comes back with practice. Find two or three people on the same path, through a class, a Microsoft community group or former colleagues, and check in with each other weekly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a long career break a problem when returning to tech?+
The length of the break matters less than whether your skills are current and whether you can explain the break calmly. A recent certification, one project you can demonstrate and a clear three-sentence explanation answer most concerns. If you have been away for many years, allow more time for the skills refresh, but follow the same method.
Which certification is best after a career break?+
Choose the one that matches the role you want rather than the most popular one. PL-300 suits Power BI and data analyst roles, AZ-900 suits a return to IT support or cloud work, and a short course such as Microsoft's AI-3025 helps in almost any role. One relevant certification and a project count for more than several unrelated ones.
Should I mention my career break on my resume?+
Yes. Give it one honest line in your timeline with the dates and a simple reason, such as full-time parenting or caring for a parent, and add what you did to refresh your skills. Hiding the gap behind year-only dates tends to raise more questions. On LinkedIn you can add the break as its own entry in the Experience section.
Can I study for a Microsoft certification while managing childcare?+
Yes, if you plan for it. Fix 8 to 10 hours a week in protected slots, such as early mornings, and agree support at home in advance. Microsoft Learn's free modules and practice assessments let you study in short sessions, and exams can be taken online from home or at a test centre, so you can choose a date that suits your family.
What flexible tech roles suit women returning after a break?+
Look at returnship and career restart programmes, hybrid or remote analyst and support roles, contract work such as dashboards for small businesses, and training roles. Decide in advance which hours you can work in India Standard Time, and say so clearly in applications, so you are matched with roles that fit your situation.
