Microsoft Fabric Free Trial: How to Practise Without Big Bills

By Abirami Seeni8 min read

Start with Microsoft's free 60-day Fabric trial, which gives you a trial capacity with nearly every workload at no cost. Plan those 60 days before you select Activate, because the clock does not reset and Copilot is not included. When the trial ends, practise on F2, the smallest paid capacity, pause it whenever you stop, and set an Azure budget alert before you create it.

Start the trial the right way

Fabric runs inside a Microsoft Entra tenant, so it expects a work or school account. If your college or employer gives you one, sign in at app.fabric.microsoft.com, open the account manager (your photo, top right) and select Start trial or Free trial. A Fabric (Free) licence is assigned the first time you sign in, as long as your organisation has Fabric enabled. If no trial option appears, your administrator has probably switched trials off, and only they can change that.

No work account? A Gmail or Outlook address cannot sign in to Fabric directly, but Microsoft documents a supported route in Start a Microsoft Fabric free trial with your personal email. You create an Azure account with your personal email, create a user in Microsoft Entra ID, sign in to Fabric as that user, and activate the trial from your profile menu. Azure may ask for a phone number and a card for verification; Microsoft says you are not charged unless you upgrade to a paid subscription.

Pick an Indian region on day one

When you activate, Fabric asks for a trial capacity region. Microsoft's region availability list shows Central India and South India with all Fabric workloads, while India West is a Power BI only region. Choose carefully: moving a workspace that holds Fabric items to another region later means deleting those items first.

Mistakes that waste trial days

  • Activating too early. The 60 days start at activation, not when you start studying. Have your plan and sample data ready first.
  • Counting on a second trial. Microsoft states that another trial may not be available and that repeated trials may be restricted.
  • Expecting a resize to buy time. Your trial is an F4 or F64 capacity. You may be able to change 4 capacity units to 64 from the Trial tab under Govern and Capacities, but changing the size never adds days.
  • Treating it as production. Microsoft positions the trial for evaluation and testing only.

What you can and cannot practise on the trial

You can practiseNot on the trial
Lakehouses, notebooks and SparkCopilot in Fabric
Pipelines and Dataflows Gen2Fabric data agent
Warehouses, plus up to three SQL databasesAI functions and AI services
Eventstreams, eventhouses and KQLPrivate Link, trusted workspace access
Semantic models and Power BI reportsAutoscale

The trial also stores up to 1 TB in OneLake and comes with a Power BI individual trial if you do not already hold a Premium Per User licence, so you can build and share reports during the 60 days.

For certification candidates, that table is good news. Almost every lab in the DP-600 and DP-700 syllabus runs on the trial. The real gap is Copilot, which Microsoft supports only on paid capacities of F2 or larger. Indian learners face a second catch: when a capacity sits outside the US or the EU data boundary, Copilot is off by default, and a Fabric administrator must enable the tenant setting that lets data be processed outside the capacity's geographic region. On your own practice tenant you are that administrator. At work, ask before you change it.

After the trial: an F2 capacity you control

When the 60 days end, trial workspaces fall back to Power BI Pro, notebooks and pipelines go inactive, and your Fabric items stay in OneLake for seven days. Assign the workspace to a paid capacity within that week and they work again.

The cheapest paid option is F2: two capacity units, the smallest F SKU. Azure bills F capacities per second with a one-minute minimum and no commitment, and pricing is regional. Before you create anything, check the current F2 hourly rate for Central India in rupees on the Fabric pricing page or in the Azure pricing calculator, and multiply it by the hours you honestly expect to study.

To create one, sign in to the Azure portal, search for Microsoft Fabric and select Create Fabric Capacity. Two set-up steps catch beginners. The Microsoft.Fabric resource provider must be registered in your subscription, and the subscription needs enough Fabric capacity unit quota in your region. If your quota shows zero, register the provider first, then raise a request under Quotas.

Two billing surprises when you pause

Pausing is the habit that keeps practice affordable, and only F capacities support it. Know what it does and does not do:

  1. Pausing settles the bill so far. Fabric smooths heavy jobs over time. When you pause, the remaining smoothed operations and overages are added to your Azure bill straight away, so a large Spark job run just before pausing is still charged.
  2. Storage keeps billing. While the capacity is paused, OneLake storage is still billed at the pay-as-you-go rate per GB, and soft-deleted files count too. Delete sample data you no longer need.

F2 is small, so practise small

On F2, Spark gets 4 Spark VCores, with bursting up to 20. That is plenty for a few hundred megabytes of practice data and frustrating for anything bigger. An active Spark session keeps consuming capacity until it stops, and the default session timeout is 20 minutes, so stop the session when you finish a notebook instead of walking away.

One licensing trap: after the trial, a Free licence still lets you create lakehouses, warehouses and notebooks on F2, but creating Power BI items outside My workspace needs a Pro or Premium Per User licence, or a Power BI individual trial. On capacities smaller than F64, viewing Power BI content needs one of those licences too. Fit your report practice inside the trial window.

A cost-safety checklist before you create F2

  • Set a budget first. In Cost Management, create a monthly budget with email alerts at, say, 50 and 90 percent. Budgets only notify: Microsoft says resources are not affected and consumption is not stopped, and cost data typically arrives 8 to 24 hours after use. Treat alerts as a late warning, not a brake.
  • Use one resource group. Keep the capacity alone in its own resource group, so the bill is easy to read and clean-up is a single delete.
  • Schedule a nightly pause. Use a Fabric runbook from the Azure Automation gallery at, for example, 11 pm IST, or call the suspend API yourself. The PowerShell below pauses a capacity; run it with the Az module after Connect-AzAccount.
$sub = "<subscription-id>"
$rg = "rg-fabric-practice"
$cap = "f2practice" # capacity names allow lowercase letters and digits only
Invoke-AzRestMethod -Method POST -Path "/subscriptions/$sub/resourceGroups/$rg/providers/Microsoft.Fabric/capacities/$cap/suspend?api-version=2023-11-01"
  • Open the Capacity Metrics app weekly. It shows which items use your capacity units and how much OneLake storage you hold.
  • Never buy a reservation for practice. Reservations suit steady production workloads, not evening study sessions.
  • Back up before the trial ends. Connect your workspace to Git, either GitHub or Azure DevOps, so notebook code and item definitions survive even if the items expire.

A 60-day plan that uses the trial well

3 to 4Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, warehouse T-SQLScheduled loads into Gold
5 to 6Semantic model, Direct Lake, DAX, securityA report on your Gold tables
7 to 8Eventstream, eventhouse, KQL, monitoringA small real-time dashboard

Keep the last few days for revision and for exporting anything you want to keep. If the medallion layers are new to you, read our medallion architecture guide before week one. Microsoft also offers a free hands-on workshop, Fabric Analyst in a Day, which fits well inside the trial window.

A trainer's tip: use the same small dataset for all eight weeks. When each week builds on the last, you finish with one end-to-end project you can explain in an interview, instead of eight disconnected exercises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Microsoft Fabric free trial really free?+

Yes. The trial capacity costs nothing for 60 days. If you use the personal email route, Azure may ask for a phone number and card to verify you, and Microsoft says you are not charged unless you upgrade to a paid subscription. Charges start only when you create a paid F capacity yourself, which is why a budget alert should come first.

Can I start a Fabric trial with a Gmail account?+

Not directly. Fabric needs a work or school identity in Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft documents a workaround: create an Azure account with your Gmail or Outlook address, create a new user in Microsoft Entra ID, sign in to the Fabric portal with that user's name and password, and activate the free trial from the profile menu.

What happens to my work when the Fabric trial ends?+

Trial workspaces revert to Power BI Pro. Power BI reports stay usable for Pro users, but lakehouses, notebooks and pipelines become inactive. Microsoft keeps that content in OneLake for seven days, and you can bring it back by assigning the workspace to a paid F capacity or Power BI Premium capacity within that time.

Can I practise Copilot in Fabric on the free trial?+

No. Copilot, the Fabric data agent and AI functions are not supported on trial capacities. You need a paid capacity of F2 or larger. For a capacity in an Indian region, a Fabric administrator must also turn on the tenant setting that allows Copilot data to be processed outside the capacity's geographic region.

Which Fabric region should I choose in India?+

Choose Central India or South India, which Microsoft lists with all Fabric workloads. India West supports Power BI only. Decide at activation, because moving a workspace with Fabric items to another region later requires deleting those items first, and you lose practice time rebuilding them.

Can I extend my Fabric trial beyond 60 days?+

Microsoft suggests contacting your Microsoft sales representative or the Azure sales team to ask about an extension, but there is no self-service button, and changing the trial size from 4 to 64 capacity units does not add days. Plan your practice so the trial covers the hands-on work you need most.
