Microsoft Exam Discounts for Students in India: What Works in 2026

By Abirami Seeni8 min read

Microsoft does not offer its student exam discount in India. Its student discounts page says academic pricing is available in most countries and regions, except India and China. Indian students can still lower the cost through time-limited Microsoft challenge and event vouchers, vouchers bought by their college, free preparation tools that prevent paid retakes, and training courses that include an exam voucher.

The headline: no Microsoft student pricing in India

Microsoft's student discounts page explains the process used elsewhere: you mark yourself as a student in your Learn profile interest survey, verify your academic status, and the discount applies when you register. The same page says this academic pricing covers most countries and regions except India and China.

So do not spend an evening setting your profile to Student and waiting for a lower price at checkout. It will not appear for an exam taken in India.

What India does have is local pricing. Microsoft's exam FAQ says associate and expert exams typically cost US$165 but are priced according to currency values in specific countries and regions, and that taxes may apply. The exam page shows your price when you schedule. Our guide to Microsoft exam costs in India explains how that works, so this article does not repeat it.

Route 1: Microsoft challenge and event offers

Microsoft regularly ties exam vouchers to learning challenges and events. They are real, but they work differently from a discount code. Two recent examples from Microsoft's own terms show the pattern:

  • Microsoft Ignite Challenge, late 2025. Complete one of nine Microsoft Learn challenges, then submit an entry form by 15 December 2025. Microsoft drew 5,000 vouchers for 50% off at random. You had to be 18 or older to enter. Read the official rules.
  • Microsoft Credentials AI Challenge, January to March 2026. Earn one of three AI-focused Applied Skills credentials and enter a draw for one of 5,000 vouchers worth 50% off, valid only for AB-730, AB-731 or AB-900, and only if the exam was booked and taken by 30 June 2026. See the AI Challenge rules.

What these offers have in common:

  • A draw, not a promise. Completing the challenge gives you an entry, not a voucher.
  • Age limits. Many require entrants to be 18 or older, which rules out most school students.
  • Narrow scope. Some vouchers cover any Microsoft exam through Pearson VUE; others cover only named exams.
  • Hard expiry. You must book and sit the exam before the expiry date, and extensions are not given.
  • One per person, not transferable. The rules forbid transferring prizes.

Every Microsoft offer page we reviewed while writing this had a fixed end date, and most had already closed. New ones tend to appear around Microsoft events, so check the Microsoft Learn credentials support pages before you pay full price.

Two warnings. First, ignore anyone selling discounted Microsoft vouchers in Telegram or WhatsApp groups. Event vouchers are personal and non-transferable, and a code bought second-hand can be void when you need it. Second, the old Microsoft Virtual Training Days site now redirects to Microsoft's general events page, so older blog posts promising free vouchers from Virtual Training Days are out of date.

Route 2: through your college

The most dependable student route in India runs through your institution, not through a personal discount.

Microsoft Learn for Educators (MSLE). The MSLE programme guide describes an Educational Institution Option for accredited colleges, universities, polytechnics and select STEM-focused secondary schools. Institutions get official Microsoft curriculum, free lab environments for teaching, and free or discounted exam vouchers for their educators. Students in those courses get the curriculum, interactive labs and free exam preparation.

Vouchers bought by the institution. Microsoft's MSLE FAQ explains that colleges can issue exam vouchers to students by buying them through Certiport's Academic Purchase Center (Fundamentals exams only) or Pearson VUE's Microsoft voucher store (Fundamentals and role-based exams). A college can also become a Certiport or Pearson VUE test centre and run exams on campus. When an exam is taken through an academic process, a Schedule with Certiport option appears on the exam page alongside Pearson VUE.

Ask your department or placement cell three questions:

  1. Is our college an MSLE institution, and which Microsoft courses do we teach?
  2. Do we buy Certiport or Pearson VUE vouchers for students?
  3. Are we a Certiport or Pearson VUE test centre?

If the answer to all three is no, share the MSLE guide with a faculty member. Faculty can request MSLE benefits through the MSLE portal.

Route 3: pay once, waste nothing

For most students, the biggest saving is not a discount. It is avoiding a second paid attempt.

  • Free practice assessments. Microsoft's practice assessments are free and can be taken as many times as you like. AZ-900, PL-300, DP-900 and many others have one. Take it, read the explanations, and book only when you score well across every skill area.
  • The exam sandbox. Try the real exam interface and question types for free before exam day.
  • Applied Skills. These scenario-based lab assessments are completed on Microsoft Learn. They prove a narrow skill on your CV, and some challenges have used them as the entry ticket for voucher draws. Our Applied Skills explainer covers how they differ from exams.
  • Free renewal. Associate certifications expire every year, and you renew them by passing a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Pay for the exam once, and keep the certification active without paying again.
  • The 24-hour rule. Reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours before your appointment, or you lose the fee. Our exam booking guide for India covers this and the ID rules.
  • Exam Replay. Microsoft's offers page lists Exam Replay, sold through Pearson VUE: one exam plus one retake, both used within 12 months of purchase. It is paid, so check whether it is offered for India and at what price before you buy.

Route 4: a course that includes the voucher

If you plan to take a structured course anyway, choose one that includes the exam voucher so you are not paying for the exam separately. Compare what is included: the voucher, practice tests, lab access and live help when you are stuck.

For a first exam, students usually pick one of these:

GoalExamLevel
Understand cloud basicsAZ-900Fundamentals
Understand AI in AzureAI-901Fundamentals
Aim for data analyst rolesPL-300Associate

A fundamentals exam is a sensible start if you are in your first or second year. PL-300 suits final-year students who already know Excel and some SQL.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Microsoft certification student discount in India?+

Not through Microsoft's academic pricing. Microsoft's student discounts page says academic pricing is available in most countries and regions except India and China. Indian students can still reduce costs through time-limited challenge vouchers, vouchers issued by their college, and courses that include an exam voucher.

How can I get a free Microsoft exam voucher in India?+

Free or discounted vouchers come mainly from Microsoft challenges and events, usually as random draws with fixed expiry dates and an age limit of 18 or older. Some colleges also buy vouchers for students through Certiport or Pearson VUE. Never buy vouchers from unofficial sellers, because event vouchers are personal and cannot be transferred.

Can school students in India take Microsoft exams?+

Yes. For online exams, candidates under 18 present their own valid ID, and a parent or guardian must be present at check-in to show their ID and give consent. Many Microsoft voucher draws require entrants to be 18 or older, so school students usually rely on their school, a training course or paying for the exam themselves.

Does marking myself as a student on Microsoft Learn lower the price?+

Not in India. The student flag in your Learn profile interest survey is how students in other countries unlock academic pricing, but Microsoft excludes India from that offer. Your exam price is the local price shown on the exam page when you schedule, plus any applicable taxes.

Are Microsoft practice tests free?+

Yes. Microsoft's official practice assessments on Microsoft Learn are free and can be attempted as many times as you like. Each question shows the answer, the reasoning and links to learn more. They are available for many exams, including AZ-900, DP-900 and PL-300, and are the cheapest way to avoid a paid retake.
