DP-300 Exam Guide for India: From SQL Server DBA to Azure SQL
DP-300, Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions, earns the Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate certification. It suits DBAs who already run SQL Server and now look after Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance or SQL Server on Azure VMs. There is no prerequisite certification, you need 700 to pass, and the English exam moves to a slightly revised outline on 27 October 2026.

What DP-300 measures from 27 October 2026
The DP-300 study guide lists five skill areas. The change log shows only one sub-area touched in this update, security for data at rest and in transit, so material written for the previous outline is still useful. Localised versions of the exam are updated about eight weeks after the English one.
| Skill area | Weight | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Plan and implement data platform resources | 15 to 20% | Choosing a service, deployment, partitioning, migration |
| Implement a secure environment | 20 to 25% | Entra authentication, TDE, Always Encrypted, auditing, row-level security, ledger |
| Monitor, configure and optimise | 20 to 25% | Query Store, DMVs, Extended Events, database watcher, automatic tuning |
| Automate tasks | 15 to 20% | SQL Server Agent, elastic jobs, ARM and Bicep, PowerShell, Azure CLI |
| High availability and disaster recovery | 20 to 25% | Backups, geo-replication, failover groups, availability groups, log shipping |
Notice the balance. Unlike many Azure exams, no single area dominates, so a weak area costs you more. If you have spent years on performance tuning but never built a failover group, close that gap first.
From on-premises DBA to Azure SQL: what changes
The engine is the same. What moves is who does the work. Microsoft's features comparison is the page to read slowly, because many exam scenarios turn on one row of it.
| Task | SQL Server you run | Azure SQL Database | SQL Managed Instance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backups | You schedule them | Automatic, point-in-time restore | Automatic, plus copy-only |
| Backup retention | Your policy | 1 to 35 days; long-term up to 10 years | Same as SQL Database |
| SQL Server Agent | Yes | No; use elastic jobs | Yes |
| Cross-database queries | Yes | No; use elastic query | Yes |
| CLR | Yes | No | Yes, without file system access |
| Restore a .bak file | Yes | No; use BACPAC | Yes, from Azure storage |
| High availability | You build it | Built in | Built in |
SQL Server on Azure VMs keeps you closest to what you know. You own the operating system and the instance, you patch them, and you configure Always On availability groups and failover cluster instances yourself. DP-300 tests all three platforms, so you must know which one a scenario points to.
A common mistake for experienced DBAs is answering from habit. If a question says Azure SQL Database, then SQL Server Agent jobs and three-part-name joins are not options, however natural they feel. The answer is usually elastic jobs, elastic query or a move to Managed Instance.
Choosing Indian regions for HA and DR
The HA/DR area asks you to recommend a design from RPO and RTO requirements. For companies that want data kept in India, the Azure region list decides a lot.
| Region | City | Availability zones | Paired region |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central India | Pune | 3 | South India |
| India South Central | Hyderabad | 3 | Central India |
| South India | Chennai | None | Central India |
| West India | Mumbai | None | South India |
Three practical points follow from Microsoft's Azure regions list:
- Zone redundancy needs a region with availability zones, so in India that means Central India or India South Central.
- Failover groups cannot use two servers in the same region, but they do not require the official pair. A Central India primary with a Hyderabad or Chennai secondary keeps both copies in India.
- Service availability differs by region. Confirm that the tier you design for exists in both regions before you commit to it.
Geo-replication is asynchronous, so Microsoft's failover groups overview warns that a forced failover can lose recent transactions. Expect at least one question that tests whether you know the difference between a planned failover and a forced one.
Labs that cover the outline without a big bill
You can practise most of the exam on Microsoft's free offers, as long as you know their limits.
- Azure SQL Database free offer. Each subscription can have up to 10 free General Purpose databases. Each gets 100,000 vCore seconds, 32 GB of data and 32 GB of backup storage a month for the life of the subscription. These are serverless databases, so an SSMS window left open stops auto-pause and burns your seconds. Free databases cannot join a failover group or an elastic pool, and elastic jobs are not available on them.
- Azure SQL Managed Instance free offer. One General Purpose instance per subscription, with 720 vCore hours a month for the first 12 months and 64 GB of storage. Failover groups and long-term retention are not supported on it. Stop the instance when you are not working.
- Student subscriptions. The Azure for Students Starter offer does not work with the free SQL Database tier; other student offers do. Our guide to Azure for Students credits explains the options.
- Paid hours. For the failover group, elastic jobs and availability group labs, use small paid resources for a few hours, then delete the resource group.
Work through these labs in order, one or two a week:
- Deploy a database with Bicep and again with the Azure CLI.
- Configure Microsoft Entra authentication and create users from Entra identities.
- Turn on auditing, dynamic data masking, row-level security, Always Encrypted and ledger.
- Find a blocking chain and a regressed query with Query Store and DMVs.
- Schedule maintenance with SQL Server Agent on Managed Instance and elastic jobs on SQL Database.
- Build a failover group between two Indian regions and run a planned failover.
- Migrate a .bak file into Managed Instance offline, then read how the Managed Instance link supports online migration.
Two T-SQL snippets you will use more than once:
-- Create a database user for a Microsoft Entra group and grant read access
CREATE USER [DBA-Team] FROM EXTERNAL PROVIDER;
ALTER ROLE db_datareader ADD MEMBER [DBA-Team];
-- Top five queries by total CPU from Query Store
SELECT TOP (5)
q.query_id,
SUM(rs.count_executions) AS executions,
SUM(rs.avg_cpu_time * rs.count_executions) AS total_cpu_microseconds
FROM sys.query_store_query AS q
JOIN sys.query_store_plan AS p ON p.query_id = q.query_id
JOIN sys.query_store_runtime_stats AS rs ON rs.plan_id = p.plan_id
GROUP BY q.query_id
ORDER BY total_cpu_microseconds DESC;
A six-week plan around a full-time job
Most working DBAs prepare in the evenings and at weekends. This plan uses the lab list above and leaves the last week for review.
| Week | Focus | Labs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Service choice and deployment; read the features comparison | 1 |
| 2 | Identity, encryption and compliance controls | 2 and 3 |
| 3 | Monitoring and query tuning | 4 |
| 4 | Automation on each platform | 5 |
| 5 | Backups, geo-replication and failover groups | 6 |
| 6 | Migration, the practice assessment and weak areas | 7 |
Take the free practice assessment at the end of week 3 as well as in week 6. The early result shows which area needs extra time while you can still fix it. When you book, use a personal Microsoft account rather than your employer's, because Microsoft warns that exam records tied to an organisational account are lost when you leave that organisation.
Where DP-300 fits in your career
DP-300 proves you can operate Azure SQL. It pairs naturally with deeper engine skills and, increasingly, with development work. If your T-SQL is not yet strong, our SQL Server Advanced course covers indexing, execution plans and administration on the engine itself. If you also build applications, DP-800, which earns the SQL AI Developer Associate certification, adds vectors, retrieval-augmented generation and CI/CD with SQL Database Projects; see the DP-800 course. Frequently Asked Questions
Is DP-300 worth it for an on-premises SQL Server DBA?+
Yes, if your employer is moving databases to Azure or already runs Azure SQL. DP-300 tests SQL Server on Azure VMs and on-premises alongside Azure SQL Database and Managed Instance, so your existing skills count. The learning is in what changes: automated backups, built-in high availability, Microsoft Entra authentication and automation with elastic jobs.
What changed in the DP-300 exam on 27 October 2026?+
Microsoft describes it as a minor update. The change log lists only one sub-area, implementing security for data at rest and in transit, and the five skill areas and their weights stay as published in the study guide. The English exam changes first; localised versions follow about eight weeks later.
Can I prepare for DP-300 using only free Azure offers?+
Mostly. The free Azure SQL Database offer and the free Managed Instance offer cover deployment, security, Query Store and backup work. They do not support failover groups, and free SQL databases cannot use elastic jobs or elastic pools. Plan a few hours of small paid resources for those labs, and delete them as soon as you finish.
Do I need a fundamentals certification before DP-300?+
No. DP-300 has no prerequisite certification. Microsoft expects working knowledge of Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs and SQL Server on-premises, plus T-SQL for administration. If you are new to databases, build T-SQL and administration skills on SQL Server first rather than collecting a fundamentals badge.
How long is the DP-300 certification valid?+
Azure Database Administrator Associate is valid for 12 months. You renew it free by passing an online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn before the expiry date shown on your profile. If it lapses, you must pass DP-300 again to earn it back, so renew as soon as the assessment opens.
